Connection through experience – Meet Victoria

For Moranbah local Victoria, supporting others is not something she found later in life. It has always been part of who she is. 

For the last 5 months Victoria works as a lifestyle support worker and acting program coordinator with selectability, supporting recipients in their day-to-day lives while building connections that encourage confidence, independence and wellbeing.  

After growing up in Mackay, she recently made the move inland for a fresh start, embracing the change and the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. 

“My background has always been shaped by connection, resilience, and a genuine passion for helping others,” said Victoria. 

That passion was formed early. Victoria grew up supporting her brother, who has an intellectual disability, and continued to help friends and family members over the years.  

Those experiences shaped her understanding of care, patience and the importance of meeting people where they are. 

“Helping others isn’t just something I do, it’s something I truly love. 

Her pathway into the sector was also influenced by her own lived experience with mental health, giving her a deeper sense of empathy and connection in her work. 

“Working at selectability felt like a natural path for me, as it allows me to combine my lived experience and caring nature into meaningful work. 

Since joining selectability, Victoria says the role has challenged her in the best way, building her confidence and expanding her understanding of community support. 

“I absolutely love working at selectability, as it has given me the opportunity to truly grow, learn, and develop both personally and professionally. 

Through her work, she has come to value the importance of connection and communication, particularly when supporting people through different stages of their journey. 

“One of the most important things I’ve learnt is the value of genuine human connection, taking the time to truly listen, understand, and meet people where they are at,” she said. 

Victoria encourages others considering a role in the sector to approach it with openness and a willingness to grow. 

“Come with an open heart and a willingness to learn. 

“It’s a role that’s incredibly rewarding, but it also requires patience, empathy, and the ability to adapt. 

Outside of work, Victoria enjoys unwinding with video games, spending time with her cat and connecting with others through shared interests, including pop culture events like Mack PopCon. 

Grounded in compassion and shaped by lived experience, Victoria continues to build strong connections in Moranbah, supporting recipients to feel understood, supported and empowered. 

“Life always offers you a second chance, it’s called tomorrow.”
