“Best friends from the moment we met” – Michael and Nicole’s story

On a regular day at the Moranbah Clubhouse, recipients enjoy a safe and warm environment and take part in activities that support wellbeing and community connection.  

Among those attending are Michael and Nicole, two recipients whose friendship has grown into a close bond from the day they first met. 

“We hadn’t met each other before Clubhouse, but since I met Nicole, she has always been my best friend,” Michael said. 

For Michael, attending the Clubhouse has made a significant difference to his day-to-day life. He said the connections he has formed help him feel better and give him something to look forward to. 

“Everyone here has been so good to me as well. I just enjoy coming here,” he said.  

“I feel better when I come in. I get to see Nicole. Otherwise, I would sit at home with nothing to do.” 

Music is one of the ways Michael and Nicole connect. Michael often plays music, bringing people together and setting the tone for the day. 

“We like the same music as well,” Michael said. “Nicole likes it when I play Whitney Matthews.” 

Their friendship continues outside of the Clubhouse, with shared outings and regular catch ups in the community, with Nicole even calling to check in on Michael when she is out of town. 

“Michael rides his bike to my place for a cuppa and a laugh sometimes too.” Nicole said. 

Nicole describes their friendship as easy, supportive and full of humour. 

“Michael has a great personality. I find him easy to get along with,” she said.  

“We like to have a laugh.” 

Looking out for one another is important to Nicole, whether they are together at the Hub or apart. 

“We are around each other all the time. I try and give him positive and kind words every day,” she said.  

For Michael and Nicole, the Clubhouse has been more than a place to attend. It has been the beginning of a friendship that brings laughter, companionship and genuine care into their everyday lives.
