Short term respite

Short term respite

The NDIS recently released new guidelines around short term accommodation, including renaming the support option ‘short term respite’ (STR).

The update, which came into effect October 2025, is about making guidelines clearer for recipients, carers and providers.

STR is designed to give informal carers a chance to take a break from their caring role, while ensuring the person they support continues to receive the care they need.

It covers the cost of your care in another place for up to 14 days at a time. You might have a short stay with other people, or by yourself.

Short term respite may suit your needs if your usual support network is not available for a short period.

The NDIS usually funds up to 28 days of short-term respite per year. You can use your STR funding flexibly. For example, you might want to use it in a block of up to 14 days at a time or for one weekend a month.

Short term respite includes:
  • personal care
  • accommodation
  • food
  • activities you and the provider agree to.
Your plan, your way

If you already have funding in your core budget, you can use this for STR.

You can choose to use your core budget on a range of supports like STR to suit your needs. You should think about the best way to use your budget to pursue the goals in your plan.

The NDIS may fund other supports if you need longer-term accommodation support. For example, they might fund medium term accommodation (MTA) or other supports depending on your needs.
