Meet the team: D’Arcy Otago

Supporting the Moranbah community means giving back to the place D’Arcy has always called home.

A third-generation Moranbah local, D’Arcy recently joined selectability as a lifestyle support worker, empowering recipients to build independence, maintain routines and work towards the goals that are important to them.

“My role is about helping people live as independently, safely, and meaningfully as possible while supporting their personal goals, routines and quality of life,” said D’Arcy. 

At 18, D’Arcy is at the beginning of her career in community services but already brings a broad range of experiences to the role.

She has worked since was 13 in a range of roles across hospitality, retail and administration, including completing an administration traineeship and working at the local bakery, golf club and Moranbah Arts.

“I’m third generation Moranbah and love calling it my home.”

Since joining selectability nearly 6 months ago, D’Arcy has enjoyed building relationships with recipients and being part of the region’s close-knit team.

“What I enjoy most about working at selectability is how rewarding the role is and the supportive, caring culture created by my coworkers.

“I also value the positive relationships built with recipients and enjoy the humour and individuality they bring to each day.”

Among her favourite experiences so far have been trips to Mackay, which provide opportunities for recipients to get out into the community, enjoy new experiences and strengthen connections outside their usual routines.

Her first months in the sector have also shaped how she thinks about independence and person-centred support.

“I have developed a deeper understanding of how to support people in a way that promotes independence, dignity, and choice, rather than simply completing tasks for them.”

For D’Arcy, doing that work in her hometown makes it particularly meaningful.

“One of the things I value most about living and working in Moranbah is the close-knit sense of community.

“This close working dynamic helps foster meaningful relationships not only among coworkers but also with recipients, creating a more personal and rewarding experience for everyone involved.”

Outside of work, D’Arcy enjoys baking and spending time with friends, giving her an opportunity to unwind and recharge.

As she continues to build her skills in the sector, D’Arcy is doing it in a community she knows well, supporting fellow Moranbah locals to have greater choice, independence and opportunity in their everyday lives.
