Palm Island

selectability was announced a finalist in this year's Queensland Mental Health Week achievement awards for our work to enhance the quality of life for individuals on Palm Island living with a mental illness.

selectability is Palm Island's only community mental health service. Since establishing in 2015 we have become part of the fabric of the Palm Island community committed to providing culturally safe services to improve the mental wellbeing of locals. We have an unwavering commitment to the communities and individuals we support and have maintained service delivery in areas that other providers don’t find feasible.

We run regular men's and women's groups that provide a safe and supportive space for individuals to yarn, make friends, learn new skills and develop community connections. Our programs emphasise self-determination and the belief that individuals identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander have the right to live a healthy, safe life with strong connections to culture, spirituality, land and ancestry.

We work collaboratively with other Palm Island service providers to support key community events and activities. We have a strong community presence and actively engage in local events such as NAIDOC week, Centenary celebrations, DV Network and Spring Fair, and Mental Health Week where we promote the reduction of stigma and misunderstanding around mental health.

The people of Palm trust selectability to provide culturally safe services. The welcoming and safe environment of selectability’s hub offers individuals an opportunity for socialising and networking that addresses the isolation and loneliness felt by many on Palm Island.

Our approach

We recognise that meaningful engagement and co-design requires insight into the challenges and opportunities impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Before establishing the service on Palm Island in 2015, the selectability committed significant time conducting foundation engagement with local leaders, key stakeholders and other service providers to ensure that the service would be tailored to the diverse needs of Palm Island residents and accepted by the community.
selectability has well established networks across Palm Island and we work collaboratively with local service providers.

We pride ourselves on hiring local support workers who understand the diverse needs of the community.
