Mackay Clubhouse recipients leave their mark on local Blue Tree Project
There was no shortage of blue paint, or enthusiasm, when Mackay Clubhouse recipients joined other community groups to leave their mark on a shared community project.
Recipients Melissa and Shirley were among community members rolling up their sleeves at Blacks Beach to help paint a tree as part of the Blue Tree Project, an initiative that uses striking blue trees to encourage conversations about mental health and suicide prevention.
For Shirley, the opportunity had been two years in the making.
After seeing a Blue Tree during a visit to Nebo, she brought the project to the attention of the Mackay Clubhouse team and had been eager to get involved if the opportunity arose locally.
Alongside Melissa, she spent the day painting, chatting with Rotary and council representatives and learning more about other opportunities to get involved in their community.
Mackay Clubhouse team leader Joe said activities like the Blue Tree Project provided opportunities for recipients to build connections beyond the Clubhouse while contributing to something meaningful in their local community.
“Getting involved in community activities gives recipients the opportunity to meet new people, build confidence and feel connected to what’s happening around them,” Joe said.
“What made this one particularly special was working alongside Rotary and council for a shared cause that has such a strong connection to mental health and wellbeing.”
Both Melissa and Shirley used the opportunity to speak with community members about other local projects, with Shirley already expressing an interest in helping with the next registered Blue Tree in Mackay.
Joe said creating those connections was an important part of Clubhouse group activities.
“It isn’t just about what we’re doing on the day. It’s about creating opportunities for people to connect, discover new interests and become more involved in their community.
“And judging by the amount of blue paint that came home with everyone, they certainly got involved!”
