Growing a safer future: supporting Queensland’s child safety workforce

Each year, Queensland Child Protection Week (QCPW) reminds us of our collective responsibility in ensuring children and young people are safe, supported, and given every opportunity to thrive.  

At selectability, this commitment goes beyond a single week, it’s a vital part of our growing presence in the sector and our contribution to its long-term sustainability. 

A key part of this is our representation on the Growing Our Own advisory group, an initiative led by Queensland’s peak body for the social services sector, QCOSS, to build a capable and resilient child protection workforce.  

Representing selectability on this influential panel is Nicola Pennington, our Therapeutic Advisor for Child and Family Care services. 

Nicola has worked in a variety of roles, from providing intensive family support alongside child safety services, to delivering psychosocial education programs across regional Queensland, and later transitioning into the residential care sector.

“Joining the Growing Our Own advisory group is a privilege,” said Nicola. 

“It’s about investing in our people, the social workers, case managers, and therapists who show up every day.”  

“By focusing on their development, wellbeing, and professional growth, we directly enhance the quality of care and safety we can provide to Queensland’s most vulnerable children and families.” 

With more than 20 years in the industry, Nicola’s journey is an inspiring one. She began studying medical laboratory science at university but discovered her passion for helping others while working as a disability support worker.  

This led her to change her degree to social work, a decision that set the foundation for a fulfilling career in community services. 

Reflecting on her career, Nicola offers this advice to those considering a role in the community services sector: 

“This work is challenging but deeply rewarding. Rely on your team, collaborate openly, and know that together you can make a lasting difference in the lives of children and young people."
