A place to call home - Karen's story

After years of supporting others and navigating significant health challenges, Karen George has shaped a new chapter grounded in stability, choice and a place she can truly call home. 

Karen has been receiving support from selectability for more than two years and moved into supported independent living (SIL) in Mount Isa in 2024. 

Originally from Palm Island and raised in Doomadgee, Karen’s life has taken her across Queensland and the Northern Territory. Along the way, she built a family, raised three daughters, worked in local communities and demonstrated strength and resilience through life’s challenges. 

Following the loss of her husband and a diagnosis of renal failure, later resulting in a permanent disability, Karen remained focused on maintaining her independence and quality of life, seeking the support she needed along the way. 

After learning about selectability through her sister, Karen joined the organisation in 2023 and says the support has transformed her day?to?day life. 

"I love selectability because I get a lot of help and support from all the staff and the organisation," Karen said. 

Before moving into her home, Karen had limited support and fewer opportunities to focus on her own wellbeing, something she has since worked to change. 

Reflecting on that time, Karen describes the challenges she navigated while continuing to care for her family. 

"It wasn't easy. I was always in my wheelchair, looking after my grandchildren, with minimal support and no good sleep.” 

Today, Karen has a safe and stable home, support when she needs it and the opportunity to focus on the things she enjoys most. 

"The difference is my living situation and support. I've got my own bed, a clean area, food on the table and I feel safe. 

Karen is supported with day?to?day tasks such as personal care, cooking, cleaning, shopping, transport and appointments, but she says some of the most meaningful moments come from simply having people around her who care. 

"The staff are my family too." 

Karen enjoys spending time at Clubhouse, creating arts and crafts, painting, pottery, cooking damper, shopping and keeping in touch with family. She also enjoys visiting the local Catholic church to collect items to share with her grandchildren. 

She credits selectability with supporting her to build stability and independence while providing an environment where she can continue to thrive. 

"Everyone is very friendly. You're able to talk to anyone about your concerns and you can see the follow through. 

"Management is amazing and always willing to support where needed.” 

Looking back on her journey, Karen reflects on the role selectability has played alongside her own determination and growth. 

"selectability got me out of some tough situations and has been the backbone for me. 

"The team has supported me better than I could have imagined. It's a place I will call my home and my family." 

For Karen, having a safe place to live, people she can rely on and the freedom to enjoy life’s simple pleasures reflects the stability and independence she has worked to build.
