World Suicide Prevention Day: make suicide prevention everyone's business

10 September 2021

This World Suicide Prevention Day (10/9) we're calling on regional Queenslanders to make suicide prevention everyone’s business to reduce its prevalence in our communities.

Suicide rates in regional Queensland are 1.5 times higher than the national average and the impacts are significant and far-reaching with every suicide affecting 135 people.

selectability CEO, Debra Burden said while it remains a top priority all year round,  having a dedicated day was an opportunity to shine a light on suicide prevention efforts and raise awareness in our community.

“Suicide is a complex issue that affects many regional Queenslanders,” said Ms Burden.

“We know that certain life events and factors can make people more vulnerable to suicide and these are times when as individuals and communities we can take action.

“While there is no single solution that will prevent it, we know that there are many protective factors that can reduce the risk of suicide.

“As individuals we can do simple things  like support family and friends when they are experiencing major life events, check in regularly with colleagues who are struggling or welcome new neighbours to the street.

“Communities also have a vital role to play by ensuring safe discussion around suicide prevention and promoting resilience building opportunities.”

World Suicide Prevention Day, observed on 10 September each year, is an international awareness day to provide a focus on commitment and action to prevent suicide.
