BikeSheds

About our BikeSheds

selectability's BikeSheds are innovative facilities designed to help regional Queenslanders overcome loneliness and get more active.

Loosely based on the proven Men’s Shed concept, selectability’s BikeShed provides an inclusive space for locals to connect, work on projects, join in group bike rides and improve their mental wellbeing.

Social isolation and loneliness can be harmful to both physical and mental health so if you're interested in finding out what the BikeSheds are about drop in borrow a bike and go for a ride, do some bike repairs in the workshop or sit down for a coffee and a chat.

In addition to the standard BikeShed program (for those 18 years of age) we offer a program specifically aimed at young people (10 - 24 years old) in Cairns, Townsville, Mount Isa and Rockhampton.

It’s a free service and everyone is welcome.

BikeSheds are proudly supported by Queensland Health and Youth BikeShed

Introducing our Youth BikeShed program!

Young people in Cairns, Townsville, Mount Isa and Rockhampton now have a safe place to connect, learn new skills and get active thanks to selectability's Youth BikeShed program!

The initiative focuses on intervention, providing activities aimed at promoting positive behaviours and preventing youths from engaging in anti-social activities.

Loneliness can be a key trigger for suicide and even before the onset of the COVID pandemic Australia was experiencing a loneliness epidemic. Our BikeSheds provide communities across regional Queensland with the opportunity to become active and more connected.

Listen to our podcast with Debra Burden, CEO to find out how the BikeShed concept came about - you can find it here.

What is in a BikeShed?

The BikeSheds include:

selectability needs community support so that we can continue improve the mental wellbeing of regional Queenslanders and contribute to suicide prevention. Lets make a positive difference to the lives of people across regional Queensland. There are many ways you can get involved and help us to make this initiative a success. Whatever the contribution, large or small, we value your time and involvement at the BikeShed.

Volunteer

We are looking for community partners and individuals to help us manage the day-to-day operations of our BikeShed. This could include opening and closing the bikeshed for one of the two daily sessions, coordinating bike repair workshops, managing the bicycle loan scheme or organising group rides. If you can commit to at least 2.5 hours a week we would love to hear from you!

Donate

We are seeking cash or in-kind support to help us manage the operations of the BikeShed. Any contribution large or small is welcomed and greatly appreciated!
