The cost of living sparing no expense on mental wellbeing

4 July 2023

As the surging cost of living takes its toll on household budgets across the state selectability is urging regional Queenslanders to reach out for support.

Recent data has shown that half of the state is worse off than 12 months ago, following the economic strain of the pandemic.

selectability Chief Operating Officer, Aaron Farrell said that with no clear end in sight, it can be easy for individuals to become overwhelmed with feelings of stress and anxiety.

“There are multiple ways we can seek help or build resilience around mental wellbeing, especially in times of high economic tension,” said Aaron.

“selectability has a range of options available to regional Queenslanders looking for mental wellbeing support during stressful times.”

“Reaching out early is key to relieving the pressure before things get too bad.

“The most important thing is that people are kind to themselves in this time of difficulty, but also that there are options available that are affordable and can assist you,” Aaron said.

“An example of this is selectability’s Mental Health Hub program, which focuses on early distress, which reduces risk factors of mental health and prevents suicide.

“Our group programs like Clubhouse and Mental Health Hub have an open-door policy, providing safe and welcoming spaces for self-help, advocacy, and socialisation.

Referrals are accepted from all sources (including self-referrals) and the program is open to all individuals above the age of 18 seeking mental health support.

“If you’ve been struggling with feelings of isolation, anxiety, depression, or stress, we’re always here to help navigate through this challenging time and support you to improve your mental wellbeing.

Counselling and therapeutic services

selectability’s team of qualified psychologists provide a safe, judgement-free space for you to discuss any concerns or issues and develop tools and strategies to build resilience and overcome challenges like the rising cost of living.

We provide services via a range of referral pathways and in-person or telehealth delivery.

From general counselling to psychology and rehabilitation counselling, our practice administration team can talk you through your eligibility to help you determine the most suitable pathway into our services.

Building resilience through education

As well as recognising your own wellbeing in order to understand when to seek help, it is equally important to recognise signs of struggle in others.

Everyone is different and handles things in their own way, so when an individual is in crisis the warning signs may not always be black and white.

It is best in this case to always be vigilant of behavioural changes in friends and family after major life changes.

These can trigger a mental health crisis, especially when it comes to events that can cause further economic stress, including:

  • job loss
  • financial hardship
  • work-related stress
  • severe illness
  • relationship breakdown

There are several ways selectability offers several mental health training programs, workshops, and events that can improve your skills regarding the strategies to support a person in distress or crisis.

These include Mental Health First Aid and Conversations About Suicide; affordable courses that help identify and support someone in a mental health crisis.

Courses are straightforward, easy to understand and are delivered across our footprint through selectability Training.
