Supporting regional Queenslanders to live the life they want

23 January 2024

People with disabilities often encounter challenges that make living independently difficult, a reality for nearly 4.4 million Australians, or 18.5 per cent of the population.

This can include physical barriers, such as inaccessible buildings and transport, or social, like stigmatisation and discrimination.

Navigating these challenges is important to leading an independent life and reach their goals.

Aaron Farrell, selectability’s COO said supporting people with disabilities wasn’t just about meeting basic needs; it was about creating an environment where they can thrive independently.

“To build a truly inclusive and accessible community, we must break down barriers and provide support for individuals with disabilities, to empower them to live independently and be an active part of their communities,” said Aaron.

“As a society, we have made progress in promoting inclusivity and independence for people with disabilities.

“The NDIS is a great an example of this with more than 610,000 Australians being supported through the scheme.

“selectability takes a holistic approach to improving wellbeing in regional Queensland communities.

“We offer a variety of programs and services across our vast footprint in regional Queensland including, in home assistance and support, community services such as transport to get our consumers to and from appointments and social events, as well as providing support when participating in these activities as needed.”

In addition to programs and support services, we also have dedicated facilities like Clubhouses, Mental Health Hubs, and BikeSheds that are tailored to community needs to support people to build positive connections with their peers, combat isolation and loneliness, and seek support for mental health concerns to benefit their overall wellbeing.

Supporting individuals with disabilities in their daily lives involves breaking down physical and social barriers and fostering community awareness.

Working together with existing services, maximising NDIS funding, and listening to our consumers and communities we can create a more inclusive society where everyone, regardless of ability, can lead a life of independence and fulfillment.
