Study and a clear pathway sees Kristy progress in her role

1 March 2022

For busy mum of two Kristy securing a role as a lifestyle support worker with selectability and a special interest in mental health lead to further education and fast career progression.

Kristy said that when she started with selectability she was juggling lifestyle support work with her role in the fitness industry but it wasn’t long before her passion for supporting people to live their best lives saw her transition into the community service sector full-time.

“After a short time with selectability I made the decision to pursue lifestyle support work full time.”

Education, a defined pathway and internal opportunities allowed Kristy to progress in her role.

“I realised that selectability had a defined career pathway for LSWs and completing recognised qualifications helped you move through it.

“So I completed my Cert IV in Mental Health with selectability Training and turned out to be everything I needed in my role ... and increased my pay level!

“It taught me so much about being an LSW, while preparing me for real life situations that I found myself in out on shift.”

While studying Kristy found an interest in NDIS planning and coordination so when position became available for a support coordinator with selectability, she applied and was successful.

“As a support coordinator I help consumers to better understand and use their NDIS plan, so that they can reach their NDIS goals.

“This includes supporting them in creating and implementing plans that make the most of available budgets and other support networks.

“My main role as is really about empowering consumers through coaching to build on their own capacity and increase their resilience and skills.

“selectability has a career pathway for support coordinators so I know exactly what I need to do to progress in my role.”

Further to completing the Certificate IV in Mental Health, Kristy has also recently just finished further studies in the Diploma of Community Services (Case Management) – also with selectability Training.
