selectability Rockhampton welcomes its first SIL resident

9 November 2022

For Rockhampton local, Jessica, finding a safe and supportive place to call home was key to achieving her NDIS goal of living more independently so when selectability was setting up a supported independent living group home she was first in line!

Jessica, who lives with an intellectual disability, was the first resident to move into the SIL home and with the support of her team is focusing on developing her skills and working towards new goals.

Regional Coordinator Deb Fitzgerald said Jessica's parents and support coordinator referred her to selectability to help build her capacity and independence.

“There is an accommodation shortage across Rockhampton, so we were delighted to welcome Jessica into our SIL home,” said Deb.

“Jessica has a dedicated team that provides her with assistance with daily tasks and works with her to overcome challenges and progress towards her goals.

“She has settled in quickly and now does a lot of the cooking and household chores.”

With the help of her Lifestyle Support Workers (LSWs), Jessica has started focusing on her goals of working towards a healthier lifestyle.

The team is so dedicated to Jessica’s wellbeing that they’ve developed an exercise program that they will perform with her.

Deb said the program would be rolled out in phases to support Jessica's goals of weight-loss and strengthening muscle tone.

“It involves different workouts five days a week, and we will be with Jessica every step of the way.”

Gaining confidence with the ongoing support of her team, Jessica is looking forward to meeting her new housemate over the coming weeks.

“We’re currently looking for a second resident for the house.

“We look forward to supporting them both to create a safe and happy place to call home."

SIL is an NDIS package designed for people who have higher support needs and require some level of assistance in the home seven days a week. This can include personal care, assistance in the home, and help getting around and accessing the community.

If your goal is to live more independently in your own home, contact selectability for more information.
