selectability committed to Sarina community despite the loss of Mental Health Hub

18 May 2023

Leading mental wellbeing not-for-profit charity, selectability, has expressed its continued commitment to the Sarina community after the loss of the planned Mental Health Hub.

The former RSL was destroyed by fire last month, after selectability had worked tirelessly to transform the building to suit community needs.

selectability Chief Operating Officer Aaron Farrell said despite the loss, interim arrangements were in place to continue delivery services in the region.

“When we surveyed the area last year, we found that 93 per cent of respondents said they needed a dedicated facility in Sarina,” Mr Farrell said.

“That is something we will continue to act on as we believe all regional Queenslanders have the right to access quality support locally.

“We are currently looking at long term options.

“Our goal is to raise funds to develop a new Mental Health Hub that will become a central location for people across the Sarina region to connect to a range of mental wellbeing and suicide prevention support.”

selectability Regional Coordinator for Sarina Justin Thompson said the community is working together so that they can continue to deliver services.

“The response from the community has been overwhelming, which is why we are committed to continuing our service delivery.” Mr Thompson said.

“We have been given temporary accommodation at the Mudth-Niyleta Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation, which will serve as the Mental Health Hub for the time being.

“We will soon be offering a new timetable of group activities, as we ensure that people across the Sarina community have access to the mental health and suicide prevention support that they need.”

selectability will continue to offer support to the Sarina region for people over the age of 18, who have mental health struggles and are suffering from isolation and loneliness.

The Sarina Mental Health Hub has temporarily relocated to 35 Central Street.

selectability will also continue to deliver NDIS services for Sarina, as well as support for those who want to apply for the NDIS, from the temporary location.
