New trainers ready to deliver Mental Health First Aid course

7 April 2022

Eight selectability employees are ready to deliver vital suicide prevention training across regional Queensland after recently completing the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) train-the-trainer program.

MHFA is a skills-based training program that teaches participants about mental health and substance-use issues.

selectability Chief Operating Officer said the initiative was part of the organisation’s commitment to improving mental wellbeing and contributing to suicide prevention across regional Queensland.

“With around 1 in 5 Australian adults experiencing symptoms of mental illness each year it is so crucial that people understand how to talk about mental health in a supportive way,” said Aaron.

“Mental Health First Aid provides skills that are so important when responding to someone in crisis.

“I am proud to say that we now have eight qualified trainers within selectability and we already have plans in place to run the training again.”

selectability’s newly qualified MHFA trainers are equipped to teach a variety of topics across the two-day course including an easy to remember action plan, ALGEE.

The five-step ALGEE plan will enable you to support someone who may be developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness.

But what does it stand for?

  • Assess risk of suicide or harm
  • Listen non-judgmental
  • Give reassurance and information
  • Encourage the person to get appropriate professional help
  • Encourage self–help and other support strategies from peers, family members, and friends.

“Suicide prevention is everyone’s business so we are keen to deliver the MHFA training to as many regional Queenslanders as possible.

“The MHFA course not only delivers practical tools and knowledge it also helps to reduce stigma that often prevents people seeking help early.”
