Meet the team: Samuel Black

6 February 2023

Meet Sam, our BikeShed Coordinator in Mount Isa.

As coordinator his role is vital to ensuring the day-to-day operations at the BikeShed run smoothly as well as ensuring the space is safe and offers opportunities for people to engage in meaningful projects!

“My role at the BikeShed as Coordinator is to teach young people how to repair and maintain their bicycles, and to expand their knowledge base in a safe and welcoming environment.” Said Samuel.

“Other responsibilities include supporting team members, as well as the general public that may walk-in to the BikeShed.

“Liaising and networking  with stakeholders and people around the community, is important so that people know where we as and how to access our services”.

When Sam is away from the BikeShed his hobbies include video games, cars, watching TV shows and movies, creating things with his tools, music and science.

Before starting with selectability Sam worked in a range of different roles that were, according to him ‘a lot more labour intensive’  … including a truck offsider, scaffold Labourer, bike mechanic and accessory fitter.

“The most rewarding part of my current role is  seeing young people who wouldn’t necessarily take part in these activities, having a crack at it and seeing them have their little celebrations at achieving something they haven’t done before, or simply the satisfaction they get from completing a task.”

If you are interested in finding out more about the Mount Isa BikeShed and the programs on offer drop in to 27 Miles St and talk to Sam and the team!
