Equipped for life – Matt’s story

From supporting regional Queenslanders to live more independently, secure appropriate housing or helping them connect to their community selectability has helped thousands of individuals achieve their goals. Mackay consumer Matt is no exception.

Matt prides himself as a champion of the local BikeShed and Mental Health Hub, as he works toward his ultimate goal of living a healthy and determined life.

Matt attends both programs 3 times a week, exploring a range of activities that help him navigate life.

“I like doing things with other groups, rather than just bikes, because if you focus on one thing, you will burn yourself out,” said Matt.

“I meet a few friends at the clubhouse as well which is great… and that is what mental health is all about right? So, I enjoy coming here.”

Mackay’s Mental Health Hub offers a range of activities that allow consumers to express their creative side, from craft and chat groups to ‘sing and strum’ a laid-back group that explores and showcases musical talents, while making new friends.

“Some days we even do things like sewing, and recently I have made a few laundry bags, so there is a lot of different things you can do here.

“I have been having car issues lately and one of the things I was taught was how to pre check my care engine, so now I do that every fortnight as well.

“Without that, I wouldn’t know what to do!”

Twice a week, Matt also attends the BikeShed, where he enjoys going on rides and helping put bikes together.

“I didn’t think I would like the BikeShed at first, but after it was explained to me, I knew I would like it.

“I am trying to maintain my fitness, I actually lost 15 kg, riding back and forth to selectability… it is like an anchor point for me to ride to.”

Since starting with selectability, Matt has exemplified the transformative power of community, physical activity and diverse engagement, which fosters mental wellbeing and personal growth.

Now with a full roster of activities he looks forward to every week, Matt advocates the benefits of each service in the Mackay region.

“I think people should just give these things a go, even for one day, and if you like it, you like it!”
