Bringing Mental Health First Aid to regional Queensland

18 October 2022

In Queensland on average two people die by suspected suicide every 11 hours. The impact of each suicide is devastating for families, friends, first responders and entire communities.

Yet most of us would not know how to support a friend or loved one in crisis.

selectability wants all regional Queenslanders to have the skills to respond and is delivering Mental Health First Aid training course to regional communities - most recently Charters Towers, Mackay, Bowen and Moranbah.

selectability MHFA trainer Annalese, said the course provided the skills and knowledge that are so important when responding to someone in crisis.

“Suicide prevention is everybody’s business and learning the skills to recognise the signs is a simple and effective way to respond to the problem," said Annalese.

“MHFA is so much more than just a two-day course, it is the beginning of conversations, the building of awareness and the spreading of mental health support.”

With around one in five Australian adults experiencing symptoms of mental illness each year it is crucial that people understand how to talk about mental health in a supportive way.

“The course provides focused training teaching regional Queenslanders skills for recognising as risk individuals and better equipping them to support and respond.

“It is so crucial that we can teach people to understand how to talk about mental health in a supportive way to help.”

Mental Health First Aid training provides you with the practical skills that are so important when responding to someone in crisis.

The course not only delivers practical tools and knowledge it also helps to reduce stigma that often prevents people seeking help early.
