Voices of Hope: reducing loneliness, one note at a time

21 March 2024

For quite some time, selectability has been finding new and innovative ways to address issues of loneliness, particularly in regional and remote parts of Queensland.

One particular program, known as “Voices of Hope” is a senior ladies choir program that launched recently in Longreach and Mount Isa for aimed at women aged over 55.

Funded by Department of Housing, Local Government, Planning and Public Works, the new program works to connect through a shared expression for singing.

selectability general manager, regional development western, Marissa Sherry says the program is designed to provide support and positive social connections for women wanting to build confidence.

“Older women in recent years have experienced increased vulnerability or are experiencing harm in key areas such as elder abuse, social isolation and experiencing barriers to accessing information advice and referrals,” said Marissa

“For those who are experiencing a crisis, it is difficult to establish or re-establish connection and too easy to feel isolated and alone.

“Having something like Voices of Hope available is so important for people experiencing loneliness and isolation.

“We have received a lot of interest from local women in Mount Isa and Longreach, and what we have found is that most of them are just looking to have some fun, make friends and find something engaging to do.

Additionally, selectability utilizes group sessions as a chance to provide information, advice and referrals for those seeking wellbeing support.

“Most of our participants are interested in the social aspect, so you don’t have to have strong singing skills to attend, it is mainly about those connections and confidence building activities in a safe and inclusive environment.”

The Voices of Hope program is seeking expressions from women living in Mount Isa or Longreach, aged 55 and over of all skill levels who are wanting to build confidence through music.
