Training initiative giving regional Queenslanders a head start

8 April 2025

As Queensland celebrates Youth Week, an innovative new program is set to demonstrate how the right opportunities combined with a supportive environment, can create life-changing pathways for young people.

The Empowered Youth program, delivered by selectability, is a 15-week mentor-guided course that offers eligible regional Queenslanders aged 15+ the opportunity to earn a Certificate I in Hospitality (SIT10222) while gaining practical skills and real work experience.

selectability General Manager, Matt Kinnane said the program was designed to help regional youth overcome employment barriers by only equipping them with in-demand skills, as well as support to find a job.

"Many young people in our regional communities face challenges breaking into the workforce," said Matt.

"This program gives them the practical skills and confidence they need to secure jobs in the hospitality sector, while providing local businesses with job-ready staff.

"Throughout the program young people are guided by a mentor, and it is an opportunity for them to connect socially with their peers in a supported environment."

Participants will master coffee-making, food safety and customer service while learning how to craft winning resumes and ace job interviews.

“The training modules will differ across the regions and in line with the needs of the learner.

"In some locations students will be offered a work placement to give them a practical experience."

The online learning environment is supported by dedicated mentors, ensuring students receive individual guidance as they work through the course.

"Through hands-on hospitality training and mentorship, participants gain not just job-ready skills but the confidence to contribute meaningfully to their communities."

Places are limited, with applications now open for the new courses in Bowen, Longreach, Moranbah and the Lower Gulf - starting in June 2025.

The program is currently delivered in Cairns, Townsville, Ingham, Palm Island, Charters Towers, Mount Isa, Mackay, and Rockhampton and has regular intakes.

Eligibility requirements apply, and may differ across regions.
