Renee Backer: leading the way at Richmond’s new Wellbeing Hub
Richmond local and selectability Regional Coordinator Renee Backer is bringing her energy, creativity and passion for people to her new role, ahead of the opening of the region’s first dedicated Wellbeing Hub.
Born and raised in Richmond, Renee said her strong connection to the community and a love of helping others led her to take a leap into the social and community services sector.
“I had been happily working at Kronosaurus Korner museum, with no thoughts of leaving, when a conversation with general manager Sally Schaefer changed everything,” said Renee.
“Sally’s passion for selectability was contagious.
“The more she shared, the more I realised that joining selectability could be an opportunity to contribute to something truly significant.
“I felt compelled to give it a red-hot go.
Now, six months into the role, Renee is preparing to welcome the community to the new Richmond Wellbeing Hub, a space created in direct response to local feedback and the need for accessible support services.
“It’s inspiring to watch people grow and evolve into the person they envision for themselves.
“Being part of their journey, offering encouragement and guidance, fills me with a profound sense of honour and purpose.
Backed by experience in tourism, childcare, hospitality, social media marketing and photography, Renee brings a unique and community-minded approach to her work.
“Working in the social community home care and disability sector has imparted invaluable lessons on compassion and empathy,” she said.
“No two experiences are alike.
“This work is not about doing things for people but doing things with them.
“One of the things I love most is seeing people grow in confidence and start to believe in themselves again.
“Even something as simple as a game of Uno or a cuppa at the Hub can make a big difference in someone’s day.”
Renee said the transformation of Richmond’s old fire station into a vibrant community hub has been a team effort.
“We’ve had amazing support from the Richmond Shire Council and local stakeholders. It’s been a real community project and I’m proud to be part of it.”
“Whether it’s one-on-one support or group programs, we’re here to help people build resilience, foster connections, and enhance their wellbeing, all without leaving town.
“Our services include NDIS supports as well as state and federally funded programs, ensuring everyone has access—regardless of whether they’re on the NDIS.”
The Richmond Wellbeing Hub opening event is open to the community and will be held on Friday 13 June from 10.30am to 12.00pm at 43 Goldring Street, Richmond (the former fire station). All welcome!
