Meet Skyye: supporting psychosocial growth in regional Queensland
For the past three and a half years, Skyye has been a key team member at selectability Bowen, making a real impact in the lives of individuals living with mental illness and disability.
Originally from Airlie Beach, Skyye began her journey with selectability as a lifestyle support worker. With a passion for helping others and a drive to grow professionally, she embraced the organisation’s career progression opportunities and transitioned into a life coach role. Most recently, Skyee has stepped up to take on the position of acting team leader.
“My role includes supporting those with lived experience and disability to engage in activities to improve their psychosocial skills and empower them to create meaningful relationships with other recipients by attending out-of-town trips and activities,” said Skyye.
Skyye works closely with recipients to help them set and work towards meaningful goals, bridging the gap between where they are now and where they want to be.
“I love my job. Organisations like selectability exist to ensure people living in isolated or rural communities have the chance to build upon their psychosocial skills, create friendships and meaningful engagement, as well as provide mental wellbeing support and assistance to integrate back into society. That’s something I think we’re all passionate about.”
Why are psychosocial skills so important?
Psychosocial skills are the tools we use to navigate daily life. They include communication, emotional regulation, problem-solving, confidence and resilience. These skills play a vital role in helping individuals build independence, form and maintain relationships, and participate fully in their communities.
At selectability, developing psychosocial skills is central to many of our programs and services. With support from team members like Skyye, recipients are empowered to improve their wellbeing, connect with others and move toward the life they want to live.
