Could you be eligible for NDIS funding?
Many people newly diagnosed with progressive conditions may not realise they could be eligible for support through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
If you’re under 65 and living with a condition that is permanent and likely to affect your daily life over time, such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), motor neurone disease (MND) or Huntington’s disease, you may be able to access funding to help with everyday tasks, participate in the community and achieve your personal goals.
In many cases, early support can help you stay in work, remain independent and maintain your quality of life for as long as possible.
Other progressive conditions that may be considered include:
- Muscular dystrophy
- Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)
- Acquired brain injuries
- Progressive hearing or vision loss (such as Retinitis Pigmentosa)
- Respiratory conditions that limit function
- And more, depending on how your condition impacts daily life
Once you reach 65, you can choose to continue with the NDIS as you have been, or you may decide to transition to the aged care system if that better suits your needs. The choice is entirely yours.
This flexibility means you can continue receiving the supports you are familiar with, from the providers you trust, while also having the option to explore different services if your circumstances or preferences change.
If you have questions about your options as you approach 65, it is a good idea to talk with your support coordinator or plan manager to make sure you are fully informed and supported in making the best decision for your future.
Disability is not one-size-fits-all. It can result from illness, injury or genetic conditions, and can affect people physically, intellectually, emotionally or socially.
