Palm Island: promoting strong connection

Palm Island: promoting strong connection

18 April 2024

Since starting operations on Palm Island in 2015, selectability has become part of the fabric of the community, and a provider of choice for locals seeking mental health support.

When 2 valued consumers found themselves without support due to a program finishing in mid-2023, the Palm Island team worked tirelessly to identify new funding options.

Regional coordinator, Janine Wyles said the consumers desperately needed support and because of their strong connection to selectability they didn’t want to change providers.

“We looked at a range of support options for the consumers, and with the new referral form for selectwellbeing we have been able to intake them into the program,” said Janine.

“They have been very excited to be able to resume their supports with us.

“Both consumers are very positive and are engaging with one on one supports and are very keen to participate in groups program.”

selectwellbeing is a  Queensland Health funded program designed to support individuals impacted by mental illness but not on the NDIS – support is available one-on-one and in groups.

For Palm Island consumers, this can include tailored group services, like the QMHW Award nominated Mahie Club and the men’s club; where consumers and employees work together to create a safe and supportive environment to socialise and connect with community.

“Consumers can engage in things like fishing, or trips to connect to country, fire making or cooking.

“This safe environment can open up meaningful conversations that are important for recovery.

“It is important for us to provide a place for people to come to feel a sense of belonging, express their creativity and improve their mental wellbeing.

“I think it is great to create collaborative group programs that have very positive, culturally safe outcomes, especially when it comes to the wellbeing of our consumers.

“… and to be able to provide services to consumers both on the NDIS and also through our selectwellbeing program, is a positive step in the recovery of more consumers.”

selectability’s strong community presence and work to reduce stigma, and promote a better understanding of mental health has meant more Palm Islanders are seeking the support they need.
