selectability shares insights on NDIS transition at remote forum

Early engagement, co-design and community partnership were just some of the insights selectability shared about transitioning to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) at a recent provider forum in Alice Springs.

The forum, run by the Department of Social Services, focused on the challenges and opportunities people and organisations face accessing the NDIS in remote areas.

Rosanne Bennett, selectability Palm Island Outlet Manager, said she was pleased that other organisations could learn from selectability’s experiences on Palm Island to ensure that their transition to the NDIS was as successful and smooth as possible.

“selectability worked closely with the Palm Island community to prepare for the transition and ensure that it took place in a way that met the needs of the individuals we support,” said Rosanne.

“Being a remote area there were many factors to consider but close partnerships with the Palm Island community meant that we were able to overcome challenges and complexities together.”

selectability is Palm Island’s only community mental health service. Since opening in 2015, selectability has secured a position as a trusted non-clinical, culturally-safe wellbeing hub that is part of the fabric of Palm Island.

“The service has evolved into more than just a provider of individual and group support. It has become a central location for self-help, advocacy and education,” said Rosanne.

“I hope that by sharing selectability’s journey on Palm Island, providers about to transition will be better informed and in a position to address challenges to accessing the NDIS early in the process.”
