Organisations collaborate to deliver safeTalk training to Rockhampton community

1 June 2021

selectability’s Mental Health Hub partnered with Central Queensland Community Suicide Prevention Network, Queensland Health and Rockhampton South Rotary last month to deliver a series of free safeTALK training workshops.

The safeTALK program aims to prepare anyone over the age of 15 to become a suicide-alert helper.

Camelia Perkins president – CQCSPN said the half-day program taught participants how to recognise when someone may have thoughts of suicide and how to respond in ways that link them with suicide intervention help.

“Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words and actions, they invite help to stay alive,” said Camelia

“Participants were taken through the practical ‘Tell, Ask, Listen and KeepSafe (TALK) method that help with the thoughts of suicide.”

selectability’s Rockhampton Regional Coordinator, Debra Fitzgerald said they were pleased to partner with CQCSPN to deliver this vital training to 16 community members.

“selectability is committed to improving the mental wellbeing of the Rockhampton community and a big part of this is ensuring that training programs like safeTalk can be delivered in appropriate and accessible facilities,” said Debra.

“It gave participants the opportunity to meet the selectability team and find out about our services and programs that support suicide prevention. We look forward to continuing to partner with key community groups and organisations to ensure the Rockhampton community has access to important programs and initiatives like this.”

Developed in 2006 by LivingWorks Education, safeTALK, complements longer suicide intervention training. So far the program has been used in over 20 countries around the world.

The training program sponsored by Rockhampton South Rotary was presented by Camelia Perkins (President – CQCSPN Inc.) and Gareth Daniels Regional Adversity Integrated Care Clinician (RAICC) Tackling Regional Adversity through Integrated Care (TRAIC) Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service (CQHHS) Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs Service (MHAODS).
