Townsville Clubhouse showcases proven approach to overcoming loneliness

31 July 2025

On Monday selectability Townsville Clubhouse members and employees opened the doors to the public to showcase the program's proven approach to creating connections, fostering a sense of belonging …. and overcoming loneliness!

With Loneliness Awareness Week just around the corner, the timing of the open day couldn’t be better to show locals that there's a welcoming, supportive community right here where people connect, belong, contribute, and thrive together.

With research showing 1 in 6 Australians experience severe loneliness – a condition as harmful to physical health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day – selectability’s Clubhouse program offers a proven, recovery-focused solution.

GM for selectability Townsville, Ryan Wiggins, said the program helped members to overcome loneliness through meaningful group activities, genuine social connection, and peer support within a safe, welcoming space.

“Ahead of Loneliness Awareness Week, we want to remind the community that support is available,” said Mr Wiggins.

“The theme of this year’s Loneliness Awareness Week, 'Moments Matter', perfectly captures what the Clubhouse is all about.

“It's in the everyday interactions that we create social connections and foster a sense of belonging.

“Sharing a coffee, working alongside others in group activities, or getting out into the community, helps to build connection and purpose and is a great way of overcoming loneliness.”

“It was great to see so many people come along to the event, including people keen to become members, their families and a number of community service providers.

“If you missed the open day, don’t worry… we have an open-door policy so you are welcome to drop in, meet the team and see the Clubhouse in action.”

selectability's Clubhouse program is open to anyone over 18 seeking support to improve their mental wellbeing.  There are a range of NDIS packages available, and funding options for those not on the scheme.
