“The best thing I have ever done” – Sharn’s story

It is a familiar scene on a regular weekday at Bowen Clubhouse - always humming with quiet activity, a safe and welcoming place for recipients to connect, learn and unwind.

From a friendly cuppa and chat to art sessions and community outings, the weekly activity calendar offers something for every pace and interest.

At a table in the light-filled art room sits recipient Sharn, carefully lifting bright fluid-art “skins” from their drying racks.

Piece by unique piece, she shapes them into one-of-a-kind cards for the new friends she has made - sharing her skills, finding purpose and satisfying her desire to contribute to the community she loves so dearly.

“Honestly, coming into selectability is one of the best things that I have ever, ever done,” said Sharn.

“I first started coming here after hearing about it from someone who works here. All I had to do was walk in, and it has always been such a positive experience.”

Sharn drops into the Clubhouse a couple of times a week, choosing activities from the calendar and joining community outings when she can.

“It’s been really good to have the transport options offered as well. I know that I can actually get here.

“I find that I’m treated very well. 

“It’s because of the calibre of people that work here to support the community. 

“They have a genuine interest in their job, and they’re extremely considerate.” 

Art has become the way Sharn contributes to the positive environment selectability provides.  

A lifelong creative, she’s preparing to teach a card-making class using fluid-art “skins” at the Clubhouse next month. 

Her process is hands-on and joyful: pour, dry, peel and shape the unique painted layers, then assemble one-of-a-kind cards. 

“Nothing is ever the same: that’s what I love about it.

“Having a place where my talents and skills are actually appreciated and wanted, and that I have somewhere I can go to contribute, not just participate, is big for me. 

“This is a joyful purpose, and it makes my heart smile.” 

Most of all, Sharn values the sense of belonging: a place to spend time and share her skills. 

“Just feeling like there’s a purpose, there’s something to look forward to, and I couldn’t be more grateful for that. 

“That’s what I tell others: you can just come and participate. 

“You’re going to find a very warm and accepting environment, and you’re going to find laughter and fun things to do.” 

For Sharn, selectability’s group programs haven’t just been a positive environment: they’ve helped her rediscover a sense of purpose and connection through giving back to her community. 

Or, as Sharn puts it: “A place that keeps me humble, teachable and thankful.”
