Smiley finds confidence and connection in Richmond

Six months ago, Samantha was searching for support in a small community where options were limited. Today, she cannot imagine her life without the care she receives from selectability.

Known to her friends as “Smiley”, Samantha has lived in Richmond for five years. 

She first came to the region for the annual field days, was offered a job and decided to stay.  

Over time, she built a quiet life filled with the things she enjoys most.

“My hobbies are wildlife caring, making craft, crochet and diamond dots,” said Samantha.  

“I love my partner, son, cats and making others happy.”

Around six months ago, a friend encouraged Samantha to reach out to selectability for mental wellbeing support.

“Being in a small community there was nothing in way of support until selectability came along.”

Since attending the Richmond wellbeing hub, Samantha said her day-to-day life has changed in meaningful ways.

“I can’t pinpoint just one thing I love about coming here. 

“I now have something to look forward to in the mornings.  

“It gets me out of the house, I have people to talk to, it’s a safe place and it brings me happiness.”

The impact has gone beyond routine and social connection.

“I haven’t had to be admitted into hospital for my mental health,” she said.  

“I haven’t isolated myself and coming here has helped me realise that I am a good person.  

“The world isn’t out to get me. I am a more confident person.”

For Samantha, the hub is not just a place to attend activities. It is a space where she feels safe, supported and free from judgement.

When asked what she would say to someone who is unsure about trying selectability, her advice is simple.

“It’s a safe, loving, caring place.  

“It’s easy to get in contact with them, they are lovely people and there is no judgement. There are so many different activities. You make friends.

“Now that I have selectability in my life, I can’t imagine not having it.  

“It’s my routine, my support.  

“Without Renee’s support, I don’t know that I would be able to overcome my fears and self-doubts.”

For Smiley, what began as seeking support has grown into renewed confidence and connection to the Richmond community.
