Short term respite: a fresh look at a popular NDIS support

The NDIS has provided welcome clarity around its short term accommodation support option, including renaming it to ‘short term respite’.

The update, which came into effect last month, is about making guidelines clearer for recipients, carers and providers.

Short term respite is designed to give informal carers a chance to take a break from their caring role, while ensuring the person they support continues to receive the care they need.

General manager selectability Cairns, Gwion Cain, said respite was an important NDIS support for both recipients and their carers.

“Respite is not a luxury, it’s a necessity,” said Gwion.

“When carers are supported to take time out, they come back stronger, more focused and better able to provide the care their loved ones need. It’s about looking after the whole support system.”

The NDIS has now clarified what this support includes, how it can be used, and what it’s not meant for. Here’s what you need to know:

• you can use short term respite for up to 14 days at a time (for a maximum of 28 days per year)
• it covers accommodation, personal care and daily living support
• it must meet the “reasonable and necessary” criteria set out by the NDIS
• it’s not intended for holidays or leisure travel.

“The changes aim to reduce confusion and ensure respite is used as intended.”

“The goal is simple, to strengthen informal supports by giving carers a break and while keeping recipients safe and supported.

“We see the difference it makes every day. Respite helps carers recharge and that means better outcomes for everyone involved.”
