Richmond recipients – delivering connection in times of crisis

With the wet season well underway across our footprint, recipients in selectability’s group programs are finding new and innovative ways to learn skills and do things they love, while staying connected with the community. 

Our group programs in Richmond have been no exception. While the region has been battling wet weather and flooding, recipients have been baking goods for affected residents and emergency crews. 

Regional coordinator for Richmond, Renee Backer, said it was the perfect opportunity for recipients to remain connected during the weather event and give back to the community. 

"That wellbeing hub is all about creating a space that is safe and welcoming, where you can learn new things and engage with others," Renee said. 

"So we all got together to give back to a community that has already given so much to us.  

“We made jam drops, cookies and slices, then delivered them to the helicopter pilots who are working long hours to deliver emergency relief and food drops to those trapped in floodwaters on stations and in Julia Creek. 

"Then we thought we would give bread a go, as they didn’t have any in the community while the road to Julia Creek was closed. 

"There has also been a large number of little joeys without mums after the floods. We found one in the grass at the hub and were able to take it to a wildlife carer!" 

Recipients Kim and Samantha also expressed their excitement to give back. 

"It makes you feel good to be able to help, everyone wants a helping hand when they need it," said Kim. 

"It felt good to help those who were helping others in our community,"  Samantha added. 

It’s these small but meaningful actions that reflect the strength of connection, care and contribution that selectability supports every day, even in the toughest conditions.
