About Personal Helpers and Mentors support
This service offers one on-one-support for people who are living with mental distress and may not be receiving support from any other organisation. This service is designed to support people to acknowledge and respect their existing skills and abilities by creating a plan to achieve a lifestyle of their choice.
We acknowledge that each person will have different goals and aspirations and as such his/her Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) will be developed to meet the his/her needs. For example a WRAP may include activities that support the person to:
- connect with family and friends
- connect with community supports
- join a sports club
- Find out about a job
- organise everyday tasks.
The PHaMs service on Palm Island is delivered by local Palm Island people, which ensures that services are culturally appropriate and relevant to the island environment.
Cultural competency is a key factor when planning all PHaMs services as people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds participate in this service.
