Meet the team: Tansi Underwood

This Thursday is Aged Care Employee Day - a chance to say “thanks for caring” to the more than 370,000 workers who make a meaningful difference in the lives of older persons in our care. 

To celebrate we’re shining a spotlight on one of our newest aged care employees – registered nurse Tansi - who has recently taken up the role of clinical lead at the Chivaree Centre in Aurukun. 

After three weeks with selectability, Tansi is already making a strong impact, overseeing care staff, recipients and day-to-day operations at the centre. 

“I enjoy working with the First Nations recipients. Learning about them and their culture,” said Tansi. 

She is supported by the regional manager and collaborates closely with local services to ensure the best possible outcomes for Elders in the community. 

Tansi brings with her a wealth of aged care experience and a career path defined by commitment and growth.  

Originally a trade-qualified house painter, she entered the care sector after encouragement from a friend and quickly found her calling. 

“The course took six months, and I never had an intention of working as an AIN, as I felt this was not for me.  

But I excelled in the course and continued to learn.” 

After working as an assistant in nursing and mentoring others, she realised she wanted to do more to support the elderly.  

She enrolled in a Bachelor of Nursing at QUT, graduating in 2019. 

“I began my journey in aged care in 2012… I knew that I wanted to affect change and assist the elderly community better.” 

The transition to remote aged care has brought a new depth to her career. 

“I enjoy learning about the community, the clients and fellow colleagues. Exploring and finding new adventures to add to my memory bank,” she said.  

“The people in remote communities have that sense of compassion and care that you don't find in the city.” 

While she acknowledges the unique challenges of remote nursing Tansi embraces the experience. 

“Remote nursing is a team job, no one person can take the load, we all have to work together to achieve the goal.” 

When asked what advice she’d offer others considering remote aged care, she’s practical and honest. 

“Do your research about the community and what to expect.  

“Be willing to be flexible. Services and clients are not straight forward or like in the cities.” 

As we mark Aged Care Employee Day, we thank Tansi and every employee that is a part of our aged care team for the support, care and expertise they bring to regional and remote Queenslanders.
