Meet the team: Kaitlyn Fowler 

Recovery looks different for everyone. For Kaitlyn Fowler, supporting that journey is about walking alongside people, listening to their experiences and helping them access the right support to achieve their goals.

Based in Bowen, Kaitlyn holds roles as both a peer support worker and service navigator, helping people navigate services, connect with community supports and build confidence as they work towards improved wellbeing.

“My role involves assisting people on their recovery journey, providing peer-based support, practical guidance, and helping them access the right services and community resources to improve their wellbeing,” Kaitlyn said.

Kaitlyn joined selectability two years ago, starting as a youth worker and LSW.

Before entering the community services sector, she built a career in hospitality, developing strong communication and relationship-building skills that continue to support her work today.

“I was drawn to the sector because I wanted to make a positive difference in people’s lives and be part of something meaningful.

“Knowing that I can support someone through challenges, help them achieve their goals, and make a lasting impact is what motivates me every day.”

For Kaitlyn, the most rewarding part of her role is seeing recipients grow in confidence as they progress through their recovery.

“What I love most about working at selectability is the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives every day.

“The best part of my job is building genuine connections with people, supporting them on their recovery journey, and seeing them achieve their goals.”

Working in peer support has taught Kaitlyn that recovery means different things to different people.

“I have learned that everyone’s recovery journey is unique, and taking the time to listen and understand each person’s needs is essential.

“I have also learned the value of empathy, patience, and building trust, as these can make a real difference in helping people feel supported and empowered to achieve their goals.”

Living and working in Bowen has also strengthened her appreciation for the role community plays in recovery.

“When someone is facing an uphill battle, having the support of a team, family, friends, and the wider community can make a significant difference.

“It truly takes a community to help people feel supported, connected, and empowered.”

Outside of work, Kaitlyn enjoys spending time with family and friends, exploring waterfalls, swimming, bushwalking and expressing her creativity.

For anyone considering a career in the sector, her advice is simple:

“You’re never too young or too old to try something different, and you never know the positive impact you could have on someone else’s life while growing both personally and professionally.”
