Meet the team: Josh Cannon

When people think about the support selectability provides across regional Queensland, they often think of the employees working directly alongside recipients every day. 

Behind the scenes, however, there are teams working to ensure those employees have the support, guidance and resources they need to deliver quality services. 

Human resources business partner, Josh Cannon is no exception having been part of the selectability corporate team for the past year and a half. 

Based in Townsville, Josh says he supports the full employee lifecycle, from recruitment and onboarding through to learning, development and employee relations.  

Working closely with leaders across the organisation, he helps create the foundations that allow employees and services to thrive. 

“People drive everything and your job is to create the conditions where they can do their best work,” said Josh. 

Originally from Charters Towers, Josh has an extensive work background in hospitality, warehousing and completed a horticulture apprenticeship before discovering a passion for human resources, a field he has now worked in for more than eight years. 

For Josh, one of the most rewarding aspects of his role is knowing that the work he does behind the scenes contributes to positive outcomes for communities across the state.

“I love the impact we have to support and build on the community.

“Seeing the roles I recruit for and how they help grow our sector certainly makes my day better. 

His decision to join the sector was driven by a desire to contribute to something meaningful and support people who need it most. 

“I think a big part is that I wanted to be a part of a community to provide the supports to those in need. 

Since joining selectability, Josh says the importance of communication and transparency has been reinforced in every aspect of his work. 

“Some of the most important things I have learned as a human resources business partner is to have well established communication and transparency. 

“I think that is key to supporting those that are providing care for our recipients each day.

He also credits the people around him as one of the reasons he enjoys coming to work each day. 

“My work colleagues are what I love the most about working at selectability. 

“Everyone is friendly and welcoming, and we all bounce off each other in times of need. 

“If I could give one bit of advice, if you are wanting to be part of a sector that makes a real difference to smaller and larger communities across regional Queensland, give it a shot.” 

Beyond his role in human resources, Josh is also passionate about encouraging conversations around mental wellbeing, particularly during Men’s Health Week. 

“Men’s Health Week is important to me as there are a lot of men out there that struggle to open up and talk about their mental health,” he said.

“As someone with lived experience, I think it is important to speak up and reach out to someone close to you because there will always be someone willing to support you.” 

Josh believes creating supportive workplaces and communities starts with open communication and ensuring people know they do not have to face challenges alone. 

Outside of work, Josh enjoys spending time with family, friends and his dog Odie. He is also a keen camper, fisherman and competitive Warhammer player.

Through his work in human resources, Josh helps ensure selectability’s employees are supported to succeed, ultimately strengthening the services that make a difference in communities across regional Queensland.
