Meet the team: Breanna Waerea

Meet Breanna - she plays a key leadership role in supporting our Mount Isa recipients across a range of programs.

Known to most as Bre, she leads selectability’s supported independent living (SIL) and child and family care services, overseeing residential properties where recipients and young people receive the support they need to thrive.

With more than four years at selectability, Bre’s journey reflects both professional growth and a strong commitment to community-based care.

Having progressed through multiple frontline and leadership roles, she now manages the day-to-day operations of SIL and 24/7 accommodation services, while also supporting young people.

For Bre, the role is about more than coordination and compliance. It is about people, advocacy and long-term impact.

“The best part of my job at selectability is being of service to others, supporting those who may require a little extra support and advocating for those who are vulnerable within the community,” said Bre.

“I love helping recipients reach their goals and building unforgettable relationships.”

Born in Longreach and raised in Mount Isa, Bre has lived in the community for more than 20 years.

“I'm currently studying at university - bachelor of nursing and in my final year. My family is from New Zealand, which makes my background Maori.”

Bre’s pathway into the sector began shortly after finishing school, when she took time to explore her options and gain experience across different roles.

After relocating briefly to Rockhampton to work as a disability support worker, she joined selectability in November 2021 in the Mount Isa region.

Since then, she has worked as a lifestyle support worker, youth worker, support coordinator with The Way Back Support Service, and acting regional coordinator in Mount Isa, before stepping into her current team leader role.

Reflecting on what drew her to the sector, Bre said the decision was guided by values rather than career planning.

“I absolutely love this role!

“I had never thought I would be receiving the opportunities I have been given when I first started, but I am very grateful I took a leap of faith and chose this sector of work.”

That sense of purpose continues to shape how she leads her teams and supports recipients and young people, particularly those growing up within care systems.

“Growing up through the system has its own barriers in life.

“Being a supportive person and service to help young people grow, learn and experience life makes me love my job more.”

Through her experience, Bre has learned the importance of flexibility and individualised support, recognising that no two people come with the same needs or circumstances.

“Everyone comes from different walks of life, and you need to adapt your support methods for every person that comes through the doors.”

For those considering a career in the sector, her advice is simple and grounded in experience.

“Take a leap of faith and give it a go. The opportunities that wait ahead are endless.”

Outside of work, Bre values time with family and friends and enjoys travelling whenever she can.

As she continues to lead and grow selectability’s services in Mount Isa, her focus remains firmly on strengthening foundations, supporting people to achieve their goals, and building a service that reflects care, respect and opportunity for the whole community.
