Jasmine gives back to the Moranbah community

For Moranbah local and selectability recipient Jasmine, Tuesdays are more than just another day. It’s her chance to connect, to contribute, and to build the life skills that are helping her grow more independent every day. 

Inside Moranbah’s busy op shop; she works alongside her selectability support worker, learning new skills and building the confidence that is helping her achieve her goal of greater independence. 

“I stack the shelves and racks,” said Jasmine. 

 “I get rewarded in picking an item to take home each time I work.” 

Most weeks, her choice is jewellery – “pretty jewellery” to be exact – pieces that catch her eye and make her smile.  

But the real reward is the confidence and sense of purpose her volunteering has brought into her life. 

Jasmine has been with selectability for a year, accessing individual support that is tailored to her needs and goals under the NDIS.  

During that time, she has enjoyed a wide range of activities, most involve community engagement.  

Whether it is a trip to the local sunflower farm or swimming at the town pool, Jasmine enjoys it all! 

Her role at the op shop is more than just giving back to her community, it’s a step toward greater independence. 

“It has helped me in finding independence to work, reaching my goal of life skills,” she said. 

Her commitment is inspiring others, with more recipients now expressing interest in volunteering.  

The Moranbah team is already in discussions with the op shop about creating additional shifts, giving more people the opportunity to gain skills, contribute, and connect. 

The relationship between selectability Moranbah and the op shop has also led to other inclusive activities, like a recent group trip where recipients could fill a bag with items for free. 

Jasmine’s journey is a testament to the NDIS in action; community access combined with goal orientated support creating meaningful opportunities for people to participate, learn, and thrive.
