I feel like I have become a better friend - Owen's story

Sarina local Owen describes himself as someone who used to be quiet and reserved. 

Now, after three years with selectability’s Clubhouse, he says the biggest difference  been not only finding connection with others but learning more about himself along the way. 

Or as he says: “not so quiet anymore.” 

Having first connected with selectability through a community event in Mackay, Owen joined Sarina’s group programs when selectability started delivering services. 

“I enjoy the Mackay groups, but Sarina’s a bit slower and quieter. It works for me,” Owen said. 

Over the years, Owen has become a familiar face around the Clubhouse, taking part in activities ranging from baking and fishing groups to art and crafts.  

“I think getting the support helps a lot to address and face your fears a bit. 

“It’s not so much throwing the baggage away but realising you’ve been carrying it around with you.” 

That reflection and shared learning have helped shape Owen’s mindset over time, allowing him to better understand himself and the people around him. 

“You can see other people around you growing, which is great. 

“Shared learning is the real blessing that I’ve discovered.” 

Owen said the Clubhouse also helped him recognise his own growth, particularly in the way he connects with others. 

“I feel I’m a better friend to others for coming here.” 

While he admits there are still “hard chips and bumps” along the way, Owen said the support and routine of Clubhouse has helped him better navigate those moments. 

“You learn how to ride those tough moments for future reference.” 

More recently, Owen has begun finalising his NDIS funding, something he hopes will allow him to continue building on the progress he has already made through group programs. 

“The growth I’ve got from it has been invaluable.” 

Alongside the social connection, Owen has also rediscovered a passion for creativity. He said art and craft activities have become an important outlet, with other recipients often noticing how focused and calm he becomes while drawing. 

“I get quiet again when I’m drawing. 

“People say I’m a different person.” 

Owen has even shared some of his artwork around the Clubhouse, including detailed portrait sketches that have drawn praise from employees and recipients alike. 

At the heart of Owen’s experience has been the sense of community created through the Sarina Clubhouse. 

Whether he’s taking part in one of the many groups or sharing a conversation around the table, Owen says it’s the small moments that continue to make a meaningful difference. 

“I love it! I come home with a spring in my step.” 

And for anyone considering reaching out for support, Owen believes the first step is often the most important. 

“Mental health is something that can cripple you as much as a physical thing. 

“You’ve got to make time for it.”
