Group activities in full swing on Palm Island

Recipients on Palm Island have been making the most of a full clubhouse calendar, enjoying a range of activities in and around the community.  

On top of the much anticipated Spring Festival last week, recipients have been enjoying everything from arts and craft to beach BBQ’s.  

Regional coordinator David Langan said the group weekly timetable is built around activities that encourage both social connection and skill building. 

“Monday we run a movie day in the back theatre room, Tuesday is arts and crafts, Wednesday is cooking group, Thursday we have bingo, which we often double up with pizza and Friday is karaoke and a beach barbecue down at Freedom Park,” said David. 

Along with this, each morning the team prepares breakfast with recipients, as well as home-delivering meals to those who may not have access to transport. 

“A very high percentage of people on the island don’t have access to a vehicle, which can make transport obviously quite difficult. 

“So we’re always out and about helping with getting food to people that need it. 

“It is really important to us that every one of our recipients is welcomed into a good environment but also has access to the necessities they need to reach their goals. 

Cooking groups are a highlight, with recipients working together to prepare meals such as pizzas, creating opportunities for fun and learning in a supportive environment. 

Arts and crafts are another favourite, often held outside on the veranda to make the most of the cooler mornings.  

Barbecues and outdoor activities add variety and ensure the clubhouse remains a lively and inviting place. 

“It’s really turning into a place that our recipients feel welcome to come to at any time. David said. 

The consistent routine of activities helps build confidence and independence for recipients, while also offering moments of connection with friends.
