Friendship, food and fun! This week on Palm Island

Recipients on Palm Island have been making the most of a full clubhouse calendar, enjoying a range of activities in and around the community. 

Alongside outings and morning fishing trips, recipients enjoyed everything from arts and crafts to cooking up a feed at the clubhouse. 

Acting regional coordinator Shae said the weekly group timetable was built around activities that encourage both social connection and skill building.? 

“Monday, we run a movie day, Tuesday is arts and crafts, Wednesday is cooking group, Thursday we have bingo, which we often double up with pizza and Friday is karaoke and a beach BBQ down at Freedom Park,” said Shae 

One of the biggest highlights at the clubhouse is Mahie (pronounced Miyee, meaning food) Club. Running for almost four years, the daily gathering continues to be a favourite, giving recipients the chance to enjoy food, friendship and conversation each morning. 

The club's reach extends beyond the clubhouse, with meals also delivered to recipients who may not have access to transport. 

“A very high percentage of people on the island don’t have access to a vehicle, which can make transport obviously quite difficult.? 

“So to be able to provide access to that kind of support has been great.”  

Arts and crafts have also proven popular at the clubhouse, with recipients using a variety of paints and stencils to create colourful designs on tea tree bark. 

Cooking classes continue to be another favourite, with recipients preparing delicious meals such as coconut cream curry and shepherd's pie.
