Finding the way back: Catherine’s story

Sometimes knowing that care is available is all you need to reach your goals.  

For Catherine English, that moment came when she needed support the most. After time away, she found herself returning to selectability, with zero hesitation. 

Having previously connected with selectability in 2019, Catherine stepped away while raising her children.  

But on the day when she needed it most, she always knew exactly where to turn. 

“I saw an ad for selectability a few weeks before I returned, so it was in the back of my mind,” said Catherine. 

“I remember that day, I really needed the help, and I didn’t want to go home to think about it. 

“I thought to myself ‘no, selectability is where you’ve got to go, and I need to go now’ 

“The team welcomed me, even though I was sobbing when I got there. 

“They sat me down, gave me a drink of water, and made sure I felt safe, I have been here ever since. 

Over the past 12 months, Catherine has reconnected not only with support, but with a sense of belonging through group programs. 

“I feel accepted for who I am, I walk in that door and I get smiles.  

“I don’t get judgement. 

For Catherine, the Clubhouse has become a space where she can take things at her own pace, while still reaching her goals. 

“I can come in and do my own thing but still feel part of a community. 

“There’s always movement, always laughter in the background and always peaceful and pleasant vibes filling the room every time you go to selectability. 

Through creative activities, writing, and structured routines, Catherine has found new ways to manage challenges and build confidence. 

“I feel like I walk away every day with a light heart and something achieved. 

Programs such as mindful sketching have also encouraged her to try new things and step outside her comfort zone. 

“It gets you to try things you didn’t think you could do. 

“It brings out confidence and self-esteem that was always there, just hidden. 

“Life coaches are always present and walking around chatting and making people feel welcome. 

“And they always encourage you to engage in there programs daily.  

“The people are always upbeat and try very hard to make the activity as fun and exciting as possible and welcome everyone to do it in their unique way.  

“Often, we are all laughing and having fun, forgetting about the outside world. 

Equally important has been the flexibility of the support she receives, allowing her to engage in a way that works for her. 

“I’m really grateful for the support I receive, because it gives me the flexibility to come and go when I need to,” Catherine said. 

“That flexibility makes a big difference. It means I’m choosing to be here, when I feel I need to be. 

Catherine has also found purpose in sharing her story, hoping to help others who may be unsure about taking that first step. 

“Just give it a go. Even just coming in to have a look, you might find something that helps. 

“I feel amazing. I feel like I’ve come alive again. 

And for Catherine, that journey is far from over. With a growing passion for writing and advocacy, she hopes to continue using her voice to support others in the community. 

“Although I am still faced with many of the trials and obstacles life brings my way, selectability is still my home away from home. 

“It’s a place where I can clear my head and focus with my friends close by.  

“It’s like a family to all of us – brothers and sisters that support us, respect us and understand us.  

“I want to share positive information. Importantly I want people to know my journey, and that there are options out there for support.”
