Finding independence - Michael's story

On a regular weekday at the Ingham Clubhouse recipients gather to connect, share a meal and take part in a range of activities that support wellbeing and community connection. 

One of those regulars is Michael, who has spent the past year building friendships and strengthening his ties to the local community through the Clubhouse program. 

Michael first received individual support in Townsville several years ago. Today, he calls Ingham home, where he continues to achieve his goals in new and meaningful ways 

Growing up in a large family,  Michael has always valued his independence and credits selectability’s support and his time at the clubhouse for helping him maintain it 

“I really like the people at the Clubhouse and connecting with the community,” he said.  

“Everyone here is friendly and supportive, and I’ve made plenty of new friends. I also really enjoy the meals we have together! 

“Before that, I was at home all the time and wanted to get out in the community more to be more independent. 

 “selectability has helped with that. They’ve supported me to get to appointments, helped me learn how to make my own meals at home and encouraged me to try new things.” 

Now, Michael said he looks forward to each visit and the chance to catch up with the friends he has made. 

“I’m always excited to go to the Clubhouse and getting out and about,” he said.  

“I really look forward to seeing everyone and finding out what’s planned for the day. It’s a great place to spend time and be part of something.” 

Looking to the future, Michael said he wants to keep learning and eventually find a job that allows him to give back to others. 

“I’d like to do a certificate III in mental health.”  

“It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while because I want to help people who might be going through similar things.  

“It would give me a sense of purpose and help me give back to the community I live in, it’s important to me.” 

When reflecting on his journey, Michael said he can clearly see how far he has come. 

“When I compare where I was to where I am now, I know I’m on a good path and doing well. 

For Michael, the support he has received from selectability has been something he has always been grateful for.  

A supportive environment where he continues to grow in confidence, build friendships and develop the skills to live more independently.
