The Australian Government is investing $550 million into services for carers.

selectability is a consortium partner as part of the Carer Gateway, delivering emergency respite and counselling to carers across regional Queensland.

If you support a family member or friend who has a disability, mental health condition, chronic health condition, terminal illness, or is frail aged, then these free services are for you.

Am I a carer?

Carers are people who look after someone who needs help with their day-to-day living.

There are more than 2.65 million carers in Australia- which means about 1 in 11 people in Australia are carers.

People become carers in different ways. Sometimes they start helping someone out bit by bit. Sometimes it happens suddenly, because of an accident or illness.

Carers can be any age. Children and young adults (under 25 years of age) are called young carers. There are more than 235,000 young carers in Australia. If you are a young carer, you may be able to get special help and support.

The definition for carer (under the Australian Government Carer Recognition Act 2010) is someone who gives care and support to a relative or friend who:

  • has a disability
  • has a medical condition (terminal or chronic illness)
  • has a mental illness
  • is frail because they are old (known as ‘frail and aged’)

Our Carer Gateway services

If you are feeling stressed, anxious, sad or frustrated, a counsellor can talk with you either in person or over the phone in the comfort of your own home.

In-person and online peer support

You might like to meet with people like you who care for someone and share stories, knowledge and experience.

In-person coaching

You can talk to a professional coach to reflect on your experience and needs, identify personal goals and create a plan to reach these goals.

Respite care

If you get sick or hurt and you cannot look after someone, emergency respite services can help you. Service providers will find ways to look after the person you care for while you have a break. Planned respite care can also help you plan for regular breaks to rest and recharge.
