Always looking ahead: Connor’s story

Youth Week is a time to recognise the strength, potential and determination of young people across Queensland.  

For 19-year-old Rockhampton recipient Connor, it is also a reminder of how far he has come. 

At 17, Connor was facing significant challenges, moving between short term accommodation and struggling to find stability. 

Connor joined selectability shortly after, receiving community access support.  

“It’s been a big improvement, actually,” said Connor.  

“Two years ago, I was in a bit of a mess, going back and forth between hostels and not having a proper place to stay.” 

With support from selectability, Connor secured stable accommodation and could begin building a more independent life.  

A foundation that created the opportunity for something much more. 

“Emily (support coordination) and Caleb (regional coordinator), were really good, they were able to get a roof over my head pretty quickly, I have gotten a lot of support from them.

“When I got into the house, it was a big step forward. I started paying rent and things began to fall into place.” 

Since then, Connor has focused on developing his skills and working towards his future.  

Recently, he completed a construction course, a significant achievement that reflects both his commitment and resilience. 

As always, the selectability team was there to celebrate his achievement.  

“I am pretty proud, only two of us completed it out of twelve,” he said. 

Now, Connor is already thinking about what comes next. 

“I’m looking to get more experience with my dad and hopefully move into something bigger one day.  

“I’m still looking for a full-time job, but I’m working towards it.” 

While Connor is quick to focus on the future, he is also learning to reflect on how much he has achieved. 

“I do try to push myself to go further, but I don’t always give myself a pat on the back,” he said. 

“Some of the support workers remind me I’m doing a good job, and that I’ve achieved a lot.” 

That mindset, a combination of ambition and growing self-belief, has been key to Connor’s progress. 

“Now I’ve got that stability, I can focus on building a routine and working towards my goals.” 

Connor’s journey highlights the importance of the right support at the right time, but also the determination it takes to make lasting change. 

As he continues to build his skills, explore career pathways and work towards independence, Connor’s story is a powerful example of what young people can achieve when they are supported to back themselves. 

“When I think about it now, I feel pretty good about where I’m at.”
